State guide
RV rental in California
California rewards a road trip, but the rental side takes some sorting. We count 196 rental outfits across the state, and they are not interchangeable. Motorhomes, camper vans and trailers each suit a different kind of trip, and the fine print on mileage and generator hours can change your total. After four rentals of my own, I read reviews first and ask about fees before I book anything.

What the 196 listings include
Of the 196 rentals in California, 82 are motorhomes, 62 are travel trailers and 50 are camper vans. Thirteen offer one-way drop, which matters if you want to end somewhere other than where you started, but expect a fee for that. Average rating sits at 4.5, so the standard is decent but not perfect. Read the recent reviews for the specific vehicle, not just the company. I once rented a van that looked fine in photos and had a fridge that never got cold. The low-star reviews would have told me.
Campers, trailers or a motorhome
A camper van is the easiest to park and the quickest to set up, which suits coastal towns and short hops. A travel trailer makes sense if you plan to stay put for several nights and want more room, but you need a capable tow vehicle and a spot that allows trailer parking. Motorhomes split the difference and are the largest group here at 82. Whatever you pick, ask how the kitchen kit works, whether linens are included, and what the pet policy is in writing. Generator hours are usually capped and charged separately if you go over.
Reviews point to a few names
OffGrid Campervans and Rv Sprinter Rental both hold 5.0 ratings with 160 reviews each, and both offer motorhomes and camper vans. OffGrid also lists pet-friendly service and airport pickup. Blu-In Off Road Rentals has a 4.9 across 335 reviews, the most reviewed of the top names, and offers insurance. FOG Campers is smaller at 5.0 from 67 reviews and rents camper vans. RV Pirates Rentals and Adventure RV both sit at 4.9 and offer delivery, with RV Pirates also listing insurance. Delivery is useful when you would rather not drive through a city on pickup day.
